Parking lot crime seems to be on the rise and in the news more lately. This will only continue as it gets darker earlier and the holidays approach.

That doesn’t mean that we should hide in our houses, do all shopping on-line and miss the beauty of the season. We should, however, take note and be aware of our surroundings. Simple precautionary steps may help you not become a victim.

First, park in a well-lit, non-remote area. Somewhere near where most of the people will be when exiting.lockemup_WEB

  • Hide valuables, briefcases, bags BEFORE you enter the lot.
  • Lock the car and take the keys. Never leave a vehicle running.

Use all your senses to and from your vehicle –

  • Walk with your head up and alert. Don’t be distracted by your cell phone. Just like texting and driving, this takes your attention away from your surroundings.
  • Listen for approaching danger. Don’t wear headphones.
  • Criminals aren’t the only thing that can cause havoc on your festivities. Moving vehicles or trip and falls can be just as dangerous.

Once you get to your vehicle don’t let your guard down –

  • Still be aware of anyone around or possibly in the vehicle.
  • Have the keys ready when you approach, but don’t unlock until you are next to the vehicle.
  • Immediately enter, lock doors, start the car and go.

Above all else, don’t take any chances. You don’t want to get hurt, and your family doesn’t either..…especially with those presents or egg nog you’re bringing home.

So, if something feels strange or out of place, odds are it is. Take another route. Call security. Walk with others.

Be Safe
